  • Joanna wrote and delivered the fast track theory course at the Junior Birmingham Conservatoire and has successfully put students in for the Grade 5 Theory course for 14 years.
  • 2011 - all candidates receiving distinction for their grade 5 theory!

What:

  • This course prepares students for their Grade 5 theory exam in June OR November 2012
  • The theory syllabus followed is London College Popular Theory Exams.
  • Grade 5 Theory of Music is an accredited exam and is on the NQF Level 2.

Why:

  • Students that wish to take Grade 6 or above on their instrument cannot do so until they have passed Grade 5 theory (for most exam boards).
  • Taking a music theory exam consolidates and expands the students's knowledge and understanding of musical notation and fundamentals.  This is essential for the performer and/or composer.

How:

  • All aspects of the Grade 5 Theory exam will be covered on the four day boot camp course.
  • Students will complete exercises throughout the day to ensure full understanding.
  • Once the boot camp course is complete, students may post as many pass papers to Joanna for marking and feedback before the exam.

Prerequisites:

  • Students must be at least Grade 3 standard on their instrument.
  • Students must be at least 14 years old (applicants under the age of 14 will be considered but must have an informal discussion with Joanna before being accepted).
  • Students must attend ALL four days.
  • Students must complete all exercises given and complete pass papers weekly between the course and the exam.
